The Waterproof Bible — A Book ReviewThe Waterproof Bible by Bardin and Marsee PublishingNEW: Added links to purchase the Waterproof Bible (below on this page) which are working as of March 2017. I bought myself a Waterproof Bible a few months ago and I think it is really impressive. It's made completely of plastic — the binding, the cover, and the pages. So it is truly a "waterproof Bible" in every sense of the word. In fact, in the shop I bought it from (Koorong at Penrith, NSW, Australia) they had one on the counter that was completely submerged underwater, in a fish tank, complete with air stone and rising bubbles. Now that I'm doing this review I wish I had taken a photo of it in the tank. A waterproof Bible has obvious uses for anyone who is into survival (or just about any outdoor activities really) and likes to read the Bible. It's also very good for people who like to do their Bible reading in the spa. It would be useful if you live in a flood zone and would like to take a Bible around with you, but are worried about it getting wet. This Bible is completely flood proof (and spa proof). I put the Waterproof Bible to the test by pouring some water on it. (Sorry the videos don't seem to be working, I'll try and get them fixed). The video below shows the water running off. It didn't stick much, just a few drops here and there. There was a bit of water in between the outer edges of many of the other pages, but this dried out eventually. 99% of the water just ran right off. When you buy the Waterproof Bible, it comes with a bit of paper (sorry — plastic — it's easy to forget) that goes over the centre part of the cover, like a mini-dust jacket.
The one that I have is the "Sportsman's" edition, which has a "camo" look to it. The cover photo is bark with moss growing on it. It also comes with a few extra pages at the front that talk about getting outdoors, and hunting, and stuff that you don't really need. For this you pay about a dollar more than the ordinary editions (blue and pink covers are available). I bought this one because green is my favourite colour and I liked the look of the cover better. I would have preferred some nice colour maps at the end to the extra "outdoor" pages but it's not that big a deal. I always like it when a Bible has colour maps at the end, and this one has no maps, just a table of weights and measures used in the Bible. Without the jacket the cover is plain. It's a soft cover, made of plastic like everything else.
The only thing that I really don't like about this Bible is the tiny font. The publisher's website says its an 8 point font. I wish it was bigger. On the bright side, it is really clear, crisp and good quality printing. The pages (which are made completely from plastic) are quite thick and strong. Unlike most Bibles, there is very little bleed through of the writing on the other side of the paper. I guess the writing needs to be that small because the pages are so thick. In the Waterproof Bible, whole NIV Bible fits into 700 pages, which is not very many. (It takes about 2000 pages to do it in a lovely big font size). One thing that makes the small type size less of an issue is that this Bible is made to be read outside, where there is more light than inside (at least in the daytime, not so much when you are sitting around the campfire). Another good thing is that there is almost no plastic smell to the pages. I've seen a lot of ordinary paper books that have a far more nasty chemical odour to them than this one. There really is almost no smell, which is impressive considering that is is 100% plastic. The Bible stays flat open by itself on the table pretty well. Unless you are looking at one of the first or the last 60-70 pages, it will stay open by itself without having to hold it open.
Here is a close up of the writing. Any blurriness you see is caused by the camera being slightly out of focus, it really is extremely clear and sharp printing.
I gave the Bible another watering so I could take some still pictures of it getting wet.

A few drops stuck to the spine. They dried out eventually. Some of the outer edges of the pages also had a few drops of water between them, but they also dried out no problem. In the photo below you can also see the construction of the spine — the pages are sewn together rather than glued, so this binding should last a long time.
Like before (when I made the videos above), almost all of the water ran straight off. The Bible is dry again, and good as new.
By this stage the table was still a lot more wet than the Bible was.

You can get the Waterproof Bible in a few other translations (apart from the New International Version or NIV). It also comes in the ESV, NLT and KJV versions.
