The Bush Tucker Man — Les Hiddins
The Bush Tucker Man TV series featuring Les Hiddins is probably the best known and best loved and respected of all the Australian wilderness survival type TV shows or DVDs that have been made. The series feature Les driving around the Top End (the North) of Australia talking about and finding bush tucker foods, and telling stories of survival expeditions that people have made in those areas. He gives a lot of credit to the Aboriginal people who taught him most of his knowledge.
Bush Tucker Man : The Complete Series, Les Hiddins. Region 4, PAL format. 7 October 2010, 5 DVD Discs, 650 Minutes.
Bush Tucker Man – The Collection, brings together all of the Bush Tucker Man stories ever filmed.
Major Les Hiddens (aka The Bush Tucker Man) became a household name in the 1990s when his television show hit Australian screens. In a battered army truck, Hiddens sought out and recorded the different types of bush food and medicines used by Aboriginal people for thousands of years. Having been a bush survival expert for the Australian Army, Hiddens travelled vast tracts of uninhabited Australia from Cape York to the Kimberley, taking viewers on an entertaining and informative journey across rugged and inhospitable terrain.
Revisit the television show that inspired the imagination and became a treasured part of Australian culture with the laconic and likeable Bush Tucker Man. Includes all episodes from Series 1 and 2 and all episodes from the ‘Stories of Survival’ series.
WARNING: Aboriginal viewers should exercise caution when viewing these DVDs as they may contain images of deceased persons.

Man vs. Wild DVDs — Bear Grylls
The series Man vs. Wild by Edward "Bear" Grylls has been (early 2010) showing on SBS TV in Australia, so you can have a look and see what you think of it. It is probably the most entertaining "how to" survival show that has been made, and you will learn a lot of useful things as well. Bear has had to "bear" some criticism for the show being too sensational — more like an action movie than real survival — and for not everything being 100% real. There are a few scenes here and there that are faked in various ways to make for better (i.e. more entertaining) television, however most of what he does is either real or could be done for real.
The only thing you need to be aware of is that he is far too reckless, jumping off waterfalls and generally doing things that would be far too risky if you were really in a survival situation. It makes for highly interesting viewing though, and you will learn what you could do if the problems that he brings on himself — through doing silly things like deliberately jumping into freezing cold whitewater rapids — happend to you by accident.
If you want to watch survival DVDs with anyone you know who isn't really into this kind of thing, Man vs Wild is the way to go, thanks to its entertaining and inspiring style.
Man vs. Wild Season 3 — Forces of Nature. Region 4, PAL format. 4 November 2009, 264 Minutes.

Armed with little more than a harmonica and a wry sense of humor, Les uses skills, bravery and ingenuity to tackle seemingly impossible situations.

Thomas J. Elpel's "Art of Nothing" DVDs
This is the excellent "Art of Nothing" Wilderness Survival Video Series by Thomas J. Elpel. I have seen these many times over as they are that kind of DVD (if you like this kind of thing). They are not entertainment in the way that Man vs. Wild is, they are more pure survival skills. They are also more real, in that everything they do is for real. They are not as extreme as some of the other survival DVDs — there are no parachute jumps into oblivion, giant snakes, or molten lava to contend with here, but the skills they demonstrate are very real. In terms of entertainment value, a highlight of each eposide is the bit near the start where he goes through the survival/camping equipment that they will be taking with them on that trip (it's not much).
I think the format is NTSC and regionless. They play in my DVD player that I bought in Australia no problem. Unlike many special interest DVDs that aren't sold by one of the giant media companies, these are real factory-pressed shiny silver DVDs, not home-recorded DVD-Rs.
Volume 1 — Three Days at the River With Nothing But Out Bare Hands, Thomas J. Elpel (DVD).
This DVD is the first of four volumes in the Art of Nothing Wilderness Survival Series by Thomas J. Elpel. He brings a different guest along with him in each one. In this first volume his daughter Felicia demonstrates many skills (e.g. how to make a bow drill fire) and makes it look like anyone could do this kind of stuff, even normal suburban people who weren't raised by Indians or wild coyotes.
One of the skills demonstrated in this excellent DVD is the making of discoidal stone knives. A large one could easily be made into a stone axe using the techniques I describe on my "How to Make a Stone Axe" page.
No knife. No matches. No food, sleeping bags or other gear. Join Thomas J. Elpel and 13 year-old daughter Felicia for this extraordinary primitive camping experience in southwest Montana. In the cottonwoods along the Jefferson River they demonstrate all the skills required to meet their basic needs, starting with nothing but their bare hands.
Skills include:
- Shelter: Grass sleeping bag on hot ground.
- Fire: The cottonwood root bowdrill set.
- Water: Boiling water in found bottles and cans for purification.
- Edible Plants: Cattail Roots, stinging nettles, rose hips, burdock, mustard greens and milkweed shoots.
- Fungi: The edible tree mushroom.
- Meat: Porcupine--killing, skinning, butchering.
- Cooking: Shishkebabs and hot rock stir-fry.
- Tools: Discoidal stone knives and digging sticks.

Volume 2 — Mountain Meadows: Camping with Almost Nothing but the Dog, Thomas J. Elpel (DVD). One of the skills demonstrated in this excellent DVD is how to make a hand drill fire.
The adventure continues! With little more than stone knives and the dog, Thomas J. Elpel and cousin Melvin Beattie venture into the Rocky Mountains to survive with whatever they can find and improvise from their surroundings. Among the wildflowers, wildlife and scenic meadows of southwestern Montana, they demonstrate all the skills needed to meet their basic needs, including:
- Shelter: A debris shelter with hot rocks.
- Fire: The mullein on sage handdrill set.
- Water: Purifying water with Aerobic Oxygen.
- Edible Plants: Sweet cicely, wild sunflower, dwarf huckleberry, musk thistle stems and "artichokes", brook saxifrage, rose petals.
- Meat: Ground squirrels--killing, skinning, butchering.
- Cooking: Cooking on an upright rock slab.
- Tools: Glass-knapped knives & the jo stick.

Volume 3 — Mountain Lakes: A Survival Fishing Trip, Thomas J. Elpel (DVD).
With little more than a flint & steel kit and a copper drinking cup, Thomas J. Elpel and daughter Cassie trek five miles back into the Rocky Mountains for a few days of fishing, fun, and survival living. Among the spectacular lakes and mountain peaks, they demonstrate all of the skills required to meet their basic needs, including:
- Shelter: Rock and log shelter with a fire.
- Fire: Flint & Steel Kit + Making char cloth.
- Water: Drinking from mountain streams.
- Edible Plants: Wild onions and glacier lilies.
- Meat: Mountain Suckers-fishing by hand, snagging by hook, plus fishing laws.
- Cooking: Cooking fish on hot coals, plus steaming wild vegetables in a stone oven.
- Tools: Tin can knives, plus forging the nail knife and making a pine bark pot.

Volume 4 — Canoe Camping: On a Song and a Paddle, Thomas J. Elpel (DVD).
With two water bottles and a flute in their canoe, Thomas J. Elpel and intern Kris Reed go survival camping at the local lake. Amidst the abundant waterfowl and wildlife and the intermittant rainshowers and thunderstorms, they camp for three days and two nights and demonstrate all of the skills required to meet their basic needs, including:
- Shelter: Canoe lean-to, canoe coal bed.
- Fire: Soda bottle puddle lens.
- Water: Aromatic herbs to kill germs.

Ray Mears Wild Food. Region 2 (UK and Europe), PAL format. 24 September 2007, 345 Minutes.
This DVD was released alongside the Wild Food book to accompany Ray's television series Ray Mears Wild Food. The set consists of two DVDs containing the following programmes:
- AUSTRALIA - Ray travels to the other side of the planet to hear from Australian Aboriginals about what food means to a hunter-gatherer and the role it plays in their culture as well as their society. Along with many other discoveries, the trip sees Ray sample that most iconic of 'bush tucker' - the witchetty grub, a huge maggot that lives in the roots of the witchetty bush.
- COAST - Ray finds out just what Britain's coast had to offer our ancestors, as he continues to explore the wild food that tickled the taste buds of Stone Age man. The coastline of Stone Age Britain was rather different than it is today, as Britain was yet to become an island.
- WETLANDS - Ray and Professor Gordon Hillman, an expert in the use of plants through the ages, look at the marshes and waterways which our ancestors used for travelling and as an abundant source of food. Along the way, Ray explains how to take the sting out of nettles and how to use water lily seeds as a source of carbohydrate. He then travels to the spectacular Ardeche Gorge in France where he gains special permission to take to his canoe and demonstrate spear fishing.
- SUMMER HARVEST - Summer Harvest shows that our ancestors would have had access to a wide variety of plant foods, but meat would have been the staple in their diet. Ray shows viewers how they would have cooked a deer in a huge pit and then demonstrates how they would have preserved the meat by smoking it.
- WOODLAND - For our ancestors, Autumn would have been the last chance to gather food before winter stole much of it away. Nuts are an obvious source of stored energy. Ray travels to the island of Colonsay in Scotland to investigate the remains of thousands of charred hazelnuts which date back to the Stone Age.

Survival With Ray Mears. Region 2 (UK and Europe), PAL format. 3 May 2010, 144 Minutes.
The iconic TV series Survival returned to our screens this April, hosted by none other than Ray Mears. This brand new series comprises of three hour-long programmes, focusing on Ray's extraordinary animal tracking and wilderness skills.
In this ground-breaking series, Ray sets himself the ultimate challenge: to track the world's top predators. Ray uses his expert tracking skills and extensive wildlife knowledge to follow the leopard in Namibia, the bear in British Colombia, and the wolf in Central Idaho.
By reading the clues these animals leave behind, he offers viewers the unique opportunity to gain a rich insight into their habits and lifestyles, as he follows them at remarkably close quarters in their natural habitats.
Survival with Ray Mears brings to life the skills Ray has in a truly exciting and compelling way: there are tears after a wolf he has been tracking for several days dies; moments of genuine danger as a bear appears at just 20 feet away; and a lifetime highlight of watching leopards at night.
Underpinning each film as Ray tracks the animals is a sub-plot focusing on the current state of each species, and the threats they now face: in Idaho the crew arrives with only days to countdown before the wolf’s status as a protected species is lifted, and local farmers indicate their intention to begin hunting them; in British Columbia the impact of global warming on the salmon population is felt by the bear, which relies on the fish as its main food source; and in Namibia, the uneasy co-existence between leopards and local farmers keen to protect their livestock, is highlighted.
Each film stunningly showcases some of nature’s richest playgrounds, set amid breath-taking scenery, which are home to an array of wildlife beyond the species being tracked.
Survival in 2010 brings back a most prestigious and popular brand, building on the classical animal storytelling of a series that broke new ground in wildlife documentary-making from its first transmission in 1960. This time round, the series clearly illustrates the all-consuming passion one man has for the world’s wildlife, and his commitment to helping us understand more about them.
For over 20 years I've been exploring the wild outdoors and what fascinates me more than anything, are the secret lives of wild animals. When I learned how to follow the clues that animals leave behind, it opened up a whole new world of understanding. And in this series I'm putting my skills to the test by tracking the world's top predators. - Ray Mears

Fire Volume 1 — The Rediscovering the Old Ways Series. NTSC format. I think it's regionless and if I remember correctly its a DVD-R (a home-recorded DVD).
This DVD is what it took for me to make my first friction fire, a bow drill fire. Though I did not have this website to help me out. I had read several books about it and even seen it done in the odd video or two, but I didn't get a fire myself until watching this video. It's the best firemaking video I have seen. Fire Volume 1 covers the bow drill fire, hand drill fire, and flint and steel firemaking.
There is also a Fire Volume 2 DVD but the methods it covers are not nearly as useful as volume 1, and I wouldn't bother with it unless you are a real fire geek.
The following review comes from the Wilderness Awareness School site: This DVD is an excellent step-by-step guide to creating fire.
If you are inspired about making fire and are looking for a clear “how to” video, this one is for you. Tom and Glen of the Midwest Skills Institute are clear and detailed with their instructions and demonstrations.
In this Volume they cover fire lays, flint and steel, bow drill, and hand drill. I really like how they detail three stages of learning for each method: first at home with modern tools and supplies, second with a knife and whatever you can find, and third truly primitive with no modern materials.
You need every advantage when learning to create fire the old way and these guys make it accessible even if you live in the city and don't have access to woods. The instruction is geared toward the beginner, but there are lots of hints and gems for the experienced fire maker.
I learned several new things from this video including how to use a two stick notchless fireboard with bow drill. The flint and steel section has great hints and information that I have never seen before. Tom and Glen are not inspiring actors, but they clearly have tons of dirt time and experience teaching these skills. Fire Volume 1 is a little cheesy at times, but the picture and sound quality is excellent and the relaxed down home style is effective.
I recommend this DVD to anyone who wants to learn primitive fire skills at home.
Content Highlights:
- Excellent fire lay building instruction
- Flint & Steel (clear explanation of technique and great char cloth making tips)
- Bow Drill (at home, with knife, full primitive)
- Hand Drill (at home, with knife, full primitive)

NEW:
National Geographic's Doomsday Preppers Season 1 DVD (3 Discs). Region 4 (Australia), PAL format. 20 Feb 2013, 540 Minutes.
These are really interesting viewing. They're quite hyped with fast cutting from one scene to the next, and loud adrenalising music as would be expected from a mainstream TV series that's meant to be both education and entertainment. Not everything they do is always the best thing to do, and of course in many cases what's best to do is a matter of opinion. There are countless ideas to be found in watching them, many of which you probably wouldn't have thought of.
From the publisher: "Post-Apocalyptic Living at Its Best.
Whether your greatest fear is nuclear attack, worldwide flu pandemic, or just a run-of-the-mill rapture it does not hurt to have all the loose ends tied up before society crumbles; one group however takes preparations way beyond a few cans of baked beans in the fallout shelter. Meet the preppers: seemingly ordinary people who spend their days learning survival techniques, stockpiling vaccines, building safe-houses and generally just getting themselves ready for the grimmest show on earth: the end of the world as we know it."
Includes All 12 Episodes of Doomsday Preppers: Season One
