Eastern Hulafish
Trachinops taeniatus
Family: Plesiopidae, the Longfin family. Size: 10 cm Distribution: The east coast of NSW. Also some parts of the southern QLD and eastern VIC coastlines. Unique to southern Australian waters. Habitat: They form large schools on coastal reefs. References: Kuiter. About the Eastern HulafishThe Eastern Hulafish is named from it's "exaggerated body movements", which is a fancy way of saying that it wriggles around a lot — basically, it does the hula (as in the dance). The Eastern Hulafish is also the most colourful of the different hulafish species (which live around some other parts of Australia's coastline). Diet: The Eastern Hulafish feeds high above the bottom, eating zooplankton. Breeding: Eggs are laid in reefs, and the male protects his eggs by wrapping his body around them.
